Preppy Hobbies: Fall Edition

Hobbies are a key aspect of the preppy lifestyle, so its important to know which hobbies to embrace during different seasons. These hobbies are the ones preppies will be indulging in the next few months.

Golf

While summer is the season most commonly associated with golf, it is not the only one. In fact, the fall months can be ideal for golfing due to the decrease in popularity. If you don’t yet golf, now may be the perfect time to learn. You can take advantage of slower rounds with less pressure to move quickly, and spend time learning the fundamentals. Top courses to play in the fall include Sugarloaf Golf Club (Carrabassett Valley, Maine), Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (Bandon, Oregon) and Omni Mount Washington (Bretton Woods, New Hampshire), but if these are out of your price range or skill level, just about any course will do.

Hiking

With cooler weather, preppies can don their favorite outfits for afternoon hikes. Flannels, corduroy and duck boots make the adventure that much more enjoyable. This makes for a great, affordable way to embrace the preppy lifestyle during this season. Some of the best fall hiking can be found in the Adirondack and Presidential ranges, but there’s no such thing as a bad hiking location as long as it allows for a quiet period of time exploring the world.

Fly Fishing

Fall is prime time for fly fishing, with October being the height of the fly fishing season. Regardless, if you were hoping for this to be the year you started fly fishing, you still have hope. With the proper gear (which can be found at preppy staples like Orvis and L.L. Bean), you can take part in this icon pass time well into November. Cooler weather means you don’t need to wake up as early to find fish near the surface.

Hunting

With bird and small game season starting across many areas of the country, its no wonder hunting is such a popular hobby for preppies in the fall. The purest preppy will hunt pheasant, quail and duck, but many will also hunt small game such as squirrel and and rabbit. Bonus points if you bring your German Short Haired Pointer or English Setter on the trip.

Feature Story

A leaf Peeper’s Adventure: New England’s Canvas

A fall foliage tour from Maine to Maryland

Nothing quite matches the beauty of New England and the Mid Atlantic in the autumn months. Cool air and warm colors are everywhere. In Maine, where the mountains plunge into the Atlantic, Acadia offers a color palette you won't find anywhere else. The deep blue of the ocean provides an almost shocking contrast to the fiery reds of maples and the golden glow of birches. At Cadillac Mountain's summit, you stand above it all. Islands floating in cobalt water, forests burning with autumn color, granite cliffs catching the light. The park's carriage roads wind through tunnels of color, each turn revealing a new composition of stone bridges, mountains, and foliage.

Travel south to New Hampshire to drive The Kancamagus Highway. In doing so, understand why this legendary 34-mile stretch is called one of America's most scenic roads. The Swift River runs alongside the highway, its waters reflecting the canopy overhead. Ancient forests of birch, beech, and maple create an overhead cathedral of gold and crimson. Stop at Rocky Gorge or Sabbaday Falls and watch the water cascade through corridors of brilliant leaves.

In Stowe, Vermont, The Green Mountains don't simply change color, they ignite. Sugar maples explode in shades of scarlet and tangerine, their brilliance amplified against the deep evergreen of spruce and fir. The classic white steeple of Stowe Community Church rises against this backdrop like something from a painting, while the valley below becomes a patchwork quilt of crimson, amber, and gold. From the heights of Mount Mansfield, the view stretches endlessly: wave after wave of flame-colored peaks rolling toward the horizon.

Leave New England and visit The Pocono Mountains in northern Pennsylvania. Here there is an intimate kind of beauty with winding roads through dense forests where the trees form complete canopies overhead, filtering sunlight into a golden glow. Waterfalls cascade through frames of scarlet and gold. Lakes mirror perfect reflections of the surrounding color. The town of Jim Thorpe sits in a gorge where mountains rise steeply on all sides, creating an amphitheater of autumn color that's best appreciated from the historic streets below.

The journey ends in Garrett County, Maryland, where high elevations deliver a late-season show that rivals anything further north. The Appalachian ridges here roll in endless succession, each one painted in the warm tones of oak, hickory, and maple. Deep Creek Lake reflects the surrounding mountains perfectly on still mornings, doubling the display. The color here has a softer quality than New England's—more amber and bronze than scarlet, like the landscape has been dipped in honey and gold.

Fall comes only one time a year. Its up to us to have the imagination and sense of exploration to capitalize on it. Next year, make sure these wonders are on your fall foliage bucket list!

The Weekly Preppy Wisdom

Reading is probably the most important mental exercise you can do. It is vitally important that you do it on a regular basis. It is weight-lifting for your brain, and the muscles you are building when you read are learning ability and memory. This is not your Aunt Edna speaking. This is Neuroscience.

Byron Tully, The Old Money Book

Reading The Weekly Preppy every week is a great start to achieving the perfect preppy persona, but reading regularly throughout the week is an essential element of the preppy lifestyle! This week, pick up a book after dinner instead of flipping on the TV, you won’t regret it. Not sure where to start? Here are some of our recommendations:

  • The Old Money Book, Byron Tully (The book this quote comes from)

  • The Pendleton Field Guide To Camping, Pendleton Woolen Mills

  • The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald
